Step 1: Look for utm_source=chatgpt.com in your Shopify reports
When ChatGPT links to a website, the link usually carries a tag on the end: utm_source=chatgpt.com. That tag tells your store the visit came from ChatGPT, even when the browser hides where the shopper came from. It is the most reliable sign you have for ChatGPT traffic.
In Shopify admin, open Analytics, then Reports, and look for reports that break down sessions or sales by UTM source or by referrer. Report names change over time, so search the reports list for "UTM" or "referrer" if you can't spot them. Filter for chatgpt.com and note the sessions, orders and sales for the last 30 days. That number is your starting point.
Step 2: Learn the referrers for Perplexity, Gemini and the other assistants
Most AI assistants don't tag their links the way ChatGPT does. Instead, the shopper's browser passes along the website they came from, called the referrer. If you know which websites belong to which assistant, you can spot their visits in the same referrer reports.
Add these to your filter list and check them alongside chatgpt.com. A visit from one of these sites straight to a product page is a strong sign an assistant recommended you.
- ChatGPT: chatgpt.com (and the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag)
- Perplexity: perplexity.ai
- Gemini: gemini.google.com
- Microsoft Copilot: copilot addresses
- Claude: claude.ai
Step 3: Add a custom pixel in Shopify's Customer events
Shopify reports are good for a quick look, but a custom pixel gives you a running record. A pixel is a small piece of code that Shopify runs on each visit. It can read the landing page address (with any UTM tag) and the referrer, and it can see when a checkout is completed, so you can link the order back to the AI visit that started it.
To add one: in Shopify admin open Settings, then Customer events, click Add custom pixel, give it a name, paste in the code, click Save, then Connect. Custom pixels follow your store's cookie settings. Keep it to what you need: the source and the order total, never names, emails or addresses. If you'd rather not write the code yourself, GEO's tracking code is a ready-made pixel that does this and shows AI orders on a dashboard.
Step 4: Ask shoppers how they heard about you
Tracking can't see a shopper who reads your name in ChatGPT, closes the app and types your store into Google later. That order shows up as Google or direct. The only way to catch it is to ask.
Add a short "How did you hear about us?" question after checkout, with "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as one of the choices. Software company Tally said on its blog in April 2026 that its onboarding survey showed far more AI-driven sign-ups than its tracking could see. Hingees, a Nigerian leather brand, only learned an order of over ₦250,000 came from ChatGPT because the customer mentioned it on a confirmation call, TechCabal reported in October 2025.
Step 5: Accept what tracking can't see
Every method here undercounts AI. Some AI apps open links without passing a referrer, so those visits look like direct traffic. Shoppers who check you out later through Google look like Google. Treat your AI number as a floor, not the full picture.
Google AI Overviews are the biggest blind spot. When a shopper clicks a link inside an AI Overview, Google sends that visit the same way it sends a normal search click, so you can't split the two apart in Shopify. Count Google AI Overviews as part of Google search, and don't mix them into your AI total. Google's AI Mode works the same way from your store's point of view.
Step 6: Compare AI orders with your normal orders
Once you can see AI orders, compare them with your store's average: conversion rate, order value and share of sales. A small number of visits can matter if they buy well. Software company Ahrefs reported in June 2025 that AI search was 0.5% of its visits over 30 days but 12.1% of its sign-ups.
Results vary from store to store, so measure your own. Digital Commerce 360 reported in September 2026 that Edible Brands' AI orders were $5.50 bigger than its site average, but its AI visitors converted at more than 5%, below the site's usual rate of more than 10%. Jeweller Draco Diamond tracked AI's share of its traffic month by month and saw it move from 0.18% to 5.45%, with 84% of AI referral traffic from ChatGPT alone, Digital Commerce 360 reported in August 2026.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT links usually carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, which is the clearest sign an order started in ChatGPT.
- Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude show up as referrers, so filter for their websites in your reports.
- A custom pixel in Settings, Customer events gives you a running record of AI visits and the orders they lead to.
- A "How did you hear about us?" question catches shoppers who saw you in ChatGPT and then searched for you on Google.
- Google AI Overviews can't be separated from normal Google search, so your AI total will always be an undercount.
Questions people ask
Does Shopify show ChatGPT orders without any setup?
Shopify records referrers and UTM tags on sessions, so its reports can show some visits and sales from chatgpt.com without extra setup. It won't group all the AI assistants together for you, and it misses visits that pass no referrer. A custom pixel and a post-checkout question fill some of those gaps.
Can I see which orders came from Google AI Overviews?
No. Google sends visits from AI Overviews the same way it sends normal search clicks, so Shopify can't tell them apart. The honest approach is to count them as Google search and keep them out of your AI total.
Why does my ChatGPT order count look so small?
It is probably an undercount. Some AI apps pass no referrer, and many shoppers see your name in ChatGPT and then search for you on Google, which records as Google. Asking "How did you hear about us?" after checkout often reveals AI shoppers your tracking missed.
Are AI orders actually growing?
Shopify's president Harley Finkelstein said in February 2026 that orders AI searches bring to Shopify were 15 times higher than in January 2025, from a small base. Triple Whale said in January 2026 its merchants recorded more than 424,000 AI-referred orders in Q4 2025, against just over 7,000 in all of 2024.
Is a custom pixel a privacy risk?
It doesn't need to be. Custom pixels in Shopify follow your store's cookie settings, and you only need the traffic source and the order total to track AI sales. Leave out names, emails and addresses.
