AI search vs Google SEO: what actually changes for a Shopify store

Less changes than you might think. The basics that help you rank on Google are the same ones that help ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity recommend you: clear product pages, real answers to real questions, and other trusted sites talking about you. Normal SEO is still the foundation, because AI assistants lean on search results to find their sources.

What changes is the prize. On Google you compete for a spot on a page of links. In an AI answer, a handful of sources get quoted and a few brands get named, so you are either in the answer or you are not. Sites like Reddit, YouTube and review roundups carry more weight, and you need to measure search visits and AI visits as two separate channels.

What stays the same between Google SEO and AI search

Both reward pages that answer a shopper's question clearly. A product page that says who the product is for, what it is made of, the sizes and the price in its first lines is easier for Google to understand and easier for an AI assistant to quote.

Both also reward being mentioned by credible sites. On Google that has long meant links. AI assistants look at the same web, and in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, being mentioned on other sites was linked to AI Overview visibility more strongly than backlinks. Most pages AI assistants cite already rank well on Google, so a store with no search presence starts behind in AI too.

Shortcuts are still off the table on both. Keyword stuffing, buying links and link swaps break Google's rules and tend to hurt the store, and AI assistants favour the clearest answer, not the page that repeats a phrase most.

  • Clear, specific product pages
  • Real answers to the questions shoppers ask
  • Mentions on trusted sites
  • Pages search bots can actually read

How Google SEO works for a Shopify store

Google SEO is about ranking. A shopper types a search, sees a list of results and picks one. Your job is to be high on that list for the searches that matter, and every position down the page means fewer clicks.

The upside is that it is well understood and easy to measure. Search Console and your analytics show which searches bring visits and which pages earn sales. The trade-off is that the top of Google now often starts with an AI Overview. Google said in May 2026 that AI Overviews have over 2.5 billion monthly users, so ranking well increasingly means being one of the sources that summary draws on, not just a blue link below it.

Google also sells ad space here. Google's Ads Help says ads can appear above, below or within AI Overviews in a list of countries that includes Australia and New Zealand. Paid and organic now sit side by side inside the AI answer itself.

How AI search works for a Shopify store

AI search is about being named. A shopper asks ChatGPT something like "best unscented beard oil for sensitive skin" and gets an answer that names a few brands and links a few sources. There is no page two. If you are not in that short list, the shopper may never see you.

AI assistants break one question into many smaller searches and build the answer from several sources. That means you need to be relevant across a whole topic, with pages that answer specific questions, not just one keyword. Long, specific questions tend to be easier to win than broad ones.

The audience is large. OpenAI said in September 2026 that 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week. ChatGPT now shows ads on its Free and Go plans, including in Australia, but OpenAI says the ads sit below the answer, are labelled, and that advertisers cannot change what the answer recommends. The recommendation itself has to be earned.

Why Reddit, YouTube and review sites matter more in AI answers

On Google, your own site does most of the work. In AI answers, other people's sites carry more weight, because an assistant wants to see many credible places saying the same thing about you before it repeats it. Ahrefs' research found Google's AI Overviews lean on YouTube, Reddit and Quora, ChatGPT leans more on publishers and news outlets, and Perplexity on niche and regional sites.

That makes Reddit threads, real YouTube reviews and "best X" roundups worth your time. The honest way in is to answer questions as yourself and say you run the brand, pitch roundup writers on why your product fits their page, and ask real customers for reviews.

Posting on Reddit while pretending to be a customer, asking friends to post fake recommendations or writing fake reviews is against these platforms' rules. It tends to get found out, removed and held against the brand, which is the opposite of what you want AI to read about you.

How to track search visits and AI visits side by side

Treat AI as its own channel next to search. In your analytics, group visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar sites as AI, and keep Google and Bing as search. Then compare visits, orders and sales for each. Canadian jeweller Draco Diamond told Digital Commerce 360 in August 2026 that tracking AI's share of sessions month by month is how it saw AI grow from 0.18% to 5.45% of its traffic.

Expect AI to look smaller than it is. Some AI apps pass no referrer, and a shopper who sees you in ChatGPT and then Googles your name shows up as a Google visit. Google's AI Overviews also arrive looking like normal Google search, so they cannot be split out. A simple "How did you hear about us?" question at checkout catches some of what analytics miss.

Judge each channel by results, not just visits. Adobe found in July 2026 that AI-referred visits to US retail sites converted at a rate 60% higher than non-AI traffic. Ahrefs reported in 2025 that AI search brought 0.5% of its visits but 12.1% of its sign-ups. Your own numbers may differ, so compare them with your store's average. GEO's dashboard shows AI assistants, search engines and everything else in one table if you would rather not set this up by hand.

  • Search: visits and sales from Google and Bing
  • AI: visits and sales from AI assistants (always an undercount)
  • Checkout survey: shoppers who say they found you through AI

Which to focus on, and when

If your product pages are thin, your site is slow or Google barely knows you exist, start with SEO basics. Clear pages, good product details and a crawlable store help both channels at once, and AI assistants rarely cite stores Google ignores.

If you already rank reasonably and get steady search traffic, add AI work on top. Check that your robots.txt is not blocking Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, find the roundups and threads AI cites for your products, and write answers to the specific questions shoppers ask.

If your products are bought after research, such as gifts, premium goods or anything people compare, AI is worth more attention sooner, because that is where shoppers ask for recommendations. Either way, there is no single winner: SEO is the foundation and AI search is the newer layer built on it.

Key takeaways

  • Clear product pages, real answers and mentions on trusted sites help you on Google and in AI answers alike.
  • Google ranks pages in a list, while AI assistants name a few brands, so you are either in the answer or not.
  • Reddit, YouTube and review roundups carry more weight in AI answers, and the only safe way in is honestly, as yourself.
  • Track AI visits as a separate channel next to search, and remember AI numbers are always an undercount.
  • Fix SEO basics first if they are weak, then build AI visibility on top.

Questions people ask

Do I still need SEO if shoppers use ChatGPT?

Yes. AI assistants lean on search results to find sources, and most pages they cite already rank well on Google. Good SEO is the foundation that AI visibility is built on.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT shows labelled ads below some answers, but OpenAI says advertisers cannot shape or change the answer itself. Google is different: its Ads Help says ads can appear inside AI Overviews in countries including Australia.

Why can't I see Google AI Overview visits in my analytics?

Google sends AI Overview visits the same way as normal search visits, so they show up as Google search. You can check whether an AI Overview appears for a search and which sites it cites, but not split those clicks out.

Should I post about my store on Reddit to get into AI answers?

Only as yourself, saying you run the brand, and only after answering the question properly. Posing as a customer or arranging fake recommendations breaks Reddit's rules and tends to hurt the store.
